Detailed Accident Report
Submitted By: AAA
Place: Hatcher Pass
Summary: 1 backcountry skier presumed caught, buried and killed
A solo backcountry skier went missing in the Hatcher Pass area on November 22. He set out after a major storm had dropped 2 feet of snow in the area, and the storm continued. The avalanche danger at the time was rated high. By the time the skier was reported overdue the next day, a large natural avalanche had blocked the access road, which prevented rescuers from reaching the area. Heavy snows and strong winds continued and high avalanche danger kept rescuers away for nearly a week. An additional 6 feet of snow fell after the skier went missing. When the weather finally improved there was evidence of many avalanches, but many more avalanches had likely run during the storm, but were now masked by deep, new snows. Authorities believe the man was buried in an avalanche. Given the lack of clues, the search has been suspended.
