Summary: 2 backcountry skiers caught, 1 partly buried, 1 buried and killed
On Thursday afternoon a 49-year-old Salt Lake City man was buried and killed in the mountains east of Salt Lake City. He and 50-year-old friend were backcountry skiing in the Gobblers Knob area when they triggered the avalanche. The survivor was swept into a tree and partly buried. He was able to free himself and search for his friend, who was buried about 1m deep despite deploying his avalanche airbag.
The avalanche danger was rated high and an avalanche warning was in effect. Fatal accidents have also occurred in the Gobbler's Knob area on 2/15/2003 and 2/25/2007.
