Location

Temptation Bowl to the East of the Telluride Ski Area,

Bear Creek Canyon

Elevation: 11,800 feet

Aspect: East-Northeast

Summary:

Very little information is known at this time. One

out-of-area snowboarder was seriously injured and

evacuated to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction. The

man suffered head, chest, and leg injuries. A woman is

confirmed buried. Rescue efforts will resume Saturday

morning after the mitigation of the remaining avalanche

danger. The medium-sized soft slab avalanche released

mid slope, and the remaining snow posses a serious

threat to rescuers.

The soft slab avalanche was triggered by the skiers

(SSAS3O) and fractured 2-3 feet deep. The avalanche

released at about 11,800 feet and ran to Bear Creek at

9,600 feet. Debris in the creek bottom is estimated at 30

feet deep.
