Summary: 1 snowmobiler caught, carried, and injured

On Saturday Jan. 4, 2003 a snowmobiler was jumping off a cornice in Darby Canyon when

the cornice broke off with him on it. He, the sled, and the cornice hit the

slope causing it to fail in a hard slab, with a crown to five feet, 150 yards

wide and a 200 feet runout. The slope was Northwest facing at 9500'. The

rider alledgedly initially landed on rock, breaking his femur and was at the

top of the 6 feet of debris at the bottom of the path. He was flown by

helicopter to the Driggs Hospital. The avalanche hazard was Considerable

with many recent, previous slides reported and human triggers expected that

day. Like the other event, the slabs lie on weak faceted snow and surface

hoar from a dry period in the second half of November.
