From in Denver:

At least 1 killed in avalanche

RIDGWAY - At least one person has died and another is injured after a southwestern Colorado avalanche Thursday afternoon, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

Our partners at the Denver Post are reporting that Susan Hale of the Avalanche Information Center's Silverton office said she had been told, preliminarily, that the two were reported to be backcountry "riders," perhaps skiers, who were staying at the Ridgway Hut in the San Juan Hut System.

She did not know their names or where they are from, according to the Post.

The Ouray Mountain Search and Rescue team says the avalanche happened just outside the town of Ridgway in an area called Elk Meadows around 3 p.m.

Numerous agencies responded, but rescuers could only get to the area by snowmobile or skis.
