Detailed Accident Report
Submitted By: AAA
Place: Marias Pass, Skyline Creek
Summary: 2 snowbike riders caught, 1 partly buried, 1 buried and killed
From the Glacier Country Avalanche Center bulletin (2/26/2012): "Northwest Montana experienced its third avalanche fatality Saturday when two riders of snow bikes were caught in an avalanche in the Skyland Creek area just west of Marias Pass and south of Hwy 2. Both riders were partially buried, one more deeply than the other. The least buried was able to dig himself free. A search located his companion with at least one foot protruding from the snow. Unfortunately when uncovered, the companion could not be revived."
FYI: A "snowbike" is a motorcycle converted to a rear-drive track with a ski replacing the front wheel. This is the first fatal accident involving snowbike riders.
