Detailed Accident Report
Submitted By: AAA
Place: Logan, Providence Canyon, Fair and Rodeo Grounds
Summary: 1 snowmobiler caught, buried and injured
A father and two teenage sons triggered a very large hard slab avalanche that buried one of the boys. Lacking all rescue equipment the pair stayed, searched and quickly found the gloved hand sticking from the snow. He was apparently not breathing after about a 15-20 minute, shallow burial. After a few rescue breaths the victim regained spontaneous respiration. A full-face shield helmet was mentioned as possibly providing a small air space.
Over the years, full-face shield helmets have been an advantage for some buried riders, but for others the helmet and face shield acted as a scoop and packed with snow giving no airspace.
We thank the family for telling their story to the Utah Avalanche Center.
