Summary: 1 snowmobiler caught, buried and killed

From the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center: On March 14th 2015 one snowmachiner was caught and buried in an avalanche near Cantwell, Alaska. He was recovered by his group, along with the aid of a nearby group, then medi-evaced to an Anchorage area hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries on March 18th.

The victim was the only one wearing rescue gear (beacon, shovel, probe and airbag) in a group of 5 snowmachiners. It took approx.10 minutes to get a beacon from another party and a probe strike to his boot. After this, it took 10-20min to get to the airway. His head was buried 6-7 feet deep.

The avalanche was a hard wind slab that stepped down to the ground on a short, ~60', river cut bank. The victim triggered the avalanche on his second pass along the slope after he got stuck and jumped off his sled (foot pen). Rough dimensions of the slide are: 1,500' wide, 1-3' deep and running ~60-70'.
